Italy IFR Turboprop Tour 2013

Hi!

I'm Flying this tour, originally organized by IVAO Italian Division. Most of Italy will be covered, with some excursions in the near countries. Here is the map:

I'll be using the BAe Jetstream 41 with FS2Crew for this tour.

Traing to stay in the ARAIG spirit, routes will be all CFMU approved, and charts will be current ones available on www.charts.aero.

 

'Nuff said, let's start.

 

LEG 1: Oristano Fenosu, LIER - Palermo Punta Raisi, LICJ

 

Route: DCT RAMEN/N0250F170 IFR M732 CAR M871 KAPIL

Allowed altitude: FL115 to FL175 Inclusive

Dispatcher comments: FILE A Z FLIGHT PLAN /// AT RAMEN ANY EVEN LEVEL BETWEEN FL110 AND FL190 INCLUSIVE

 

We will file a Z flightplan, as LIER hasn't instrumental procedures. So we will climb initially to FL155 under VFR rules. At RAMEN intersection, we will climb FL170 and start the IFR part of our flightplan following the M732 low level route to Carbonara VOR. Then, M871 to KAPIL, where we will start  the approach to Palermo via the KAPIL2C STAR.

After the STAR, we will perform an ILS approach for runway 25. The route segments have been entered and the flight path is perfectly drawn on my little screen:

LEG 2: Palermo Punta Raisi, LICJ - Bordj El Amri, DTTI

 

As for LIER, Oristano, I had to design myself the airport. Both LIER and DTTI have simply one runway in stock FSX.

Sadly, no charts are available, but a sharp Google Maps ortophoto has been enough to get an airport layout as close as possible to the real one.

Allowed altitude: FL110 to FL190 Inclusive

So, this time, we will depart under IFR rules, and will change to VFR at TUC VOR. No published procedures at DTTI.

More, we will start with an odd flight level (Italy has North/South semicircular rules) and change to an even flight level after TUPAL intersection.

 

The FSBuild dedicated profile is quite exact and gives me the right numbers to calculate fuel quantities and much more:

Jeez I just spotted this thread - great read while I am at work :) Is this the PMDG Jetstream? Great shots - I love the one over the city with all those buildings absolutely fantastic shot!

 

May I ask what scenery you are using? Is it FTXG with some photoscenery?

Jim, it's the PMDG Jetsream. The scenery is FTX Global with some modified airports. Lampedusa island is photoreal.

Nice - That plane always used to CTD when I used it so i got rid - other PMDG planes no problems just that one. It was nice and shiny though with plenty of features.

Today's route is a particular one. Due to airways restrictions, we will have to fly northbound and then eastbound to reach the adriatic coast.

With Traffic X, I've been able to import my IVAO Virtual Airline models and liveries. Filling in some accurate flight plans, it's nice to see some friends while Flying offline, too. Passing by a company A320.

I love to follow published procedure simply using HDG:

Italy is quite small and you can embrace wide portions of land with a sight from above. Looks like a view to a geographic map. We are now leaving the coasts of Calabria over Tyrrhenian Sea. The familiar shape of Mount Etna is visible Beyond Messina Strait.

After cutting Italy west to east, we are now reaching Foggia. While the administrative region is called Puglia, this wide portion of land is also known as "Tavoliere delle Puglie". You can translate "Tavoliere" as "flat like a table", and you can guess why:

Same place, looking North, the landscape is pretty different, with the mountains of Italian Apennines, running from North to South like a national "backbone":

And now the memories are back. This is Brindisi, where my flight simulation passion started. How? My father was a ship captain, and you can see the Harbor is quite near the airport. When I was about 13, I spent whole days on the ship deck watching the aircraft on final approach. Some time later, I asked my mom to purchase a copy of FS4, with a collection of italian sceneries and aircrafts. It was a now dismissed company, Simula Flightware.

Grazie for the postcards. Oh Italy! Beautiful country, the art, the architecture, the food, the wine, the women people.

 

Brindisi was a staging point on the Imperial route to Australia where passengers arrived by train from Rome, stayed in hotels overnight and boarded flying boats to Alexandria in the morning. Palermo to Brindisi is one of my favourite routes. :)

Keep them coming Rosario. I have flown that route UK to Australia in a Constellation and in modern liners.
