  2. Bundle Update Status

The last Airport Diagram bundle updates were completed on August 20, 2017. The next bundle updates are anticipated on September 20, 2017 and normally require one or two days. I'll post an announcement when they are complete. John
  3. Mutley's Hangar is happy to announce that the free download of airport diagram bundles is again available, in a new location on the re-worked MH site. Have a look at ...http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php?/topic/23067-airport-diagram-download-center/
  4. Airport Complexity Score We no longer have a file library and only a download capacity for airport diagram bundles. Therefore this complexity score is no longer visible to anyone except Airport Diagram subscribers, who still get it for individual airports with their daily e-mails. If you don't use the airport diagrams from the file library, there's no reason to read this thread. I've developed a "Complexity Score" statistic to give users the ability to judge at a glance how an airport stacks up against others. The score will simply be a number and it will be derived by the standard below. The scoring criteria are subjective and un-scientific, but I've been running it against the new airports produced for a week or so and it appears to do a relatively good job of sorting the airports. Note that the score is intended to reflect both visual and operational complexity, so an airport with a large number of radio frequencies or published approaches could conceivably score higher than one that is visually similar. Beginning tomorrow, 4/27/15, I will begin to include a new statistic on the download page for all new and updated airport diagrams and will also begin to slowly backfit the same data into into the 3,900+ existing diagrams. The latter project will likely take some considerable period of time. I will include a link to this thread in the posting code of each new and edited airport diagram so users can easily refer to the scoring criteria. = = = = = AIRPORT COMPLEXITY SCORING CRITERIA = = = = = Runways: 2 points for each paved runway; 1 point for each un-paved runway. Closed runways receive 1 point less than what would be their normal score so a closed, paved runway gets 1 point and a closed un-paved runway gets 0 points. Asphalt, concrete, tarmac, macadam, bituminous, planks and steel count as paved. The list of un-paved surfaces includes clay, coral; dirt; grass; gravel; oil treated; sand; shale; turf; water; snow; ice. Helipads: Any number = 1 point; none = 0 points Ramps: Any number of ramps and aprons = 1 point; none = 0 points Taxiways: Any number of taxiways, labeled or un-labeled = 1 point; none = 0 points Fuel: Any number of MS fuel pumps = 1 point; none = 0 points Tower: Towered = 1 point; non-towered = 0 points Lighted: If field is lighted, 1 point, including VASI-only lighting; un-lighted gets 0 points. Frequencies: Points equal to the number of published radio frequencies listed in FSX. ILS: Each ILS = 1; a category II or III ILS = 2 points; a Localizer-only approach = 0 points. Navaids: If any NDB, LOM, LMM, DME, VOR or VOR/DME lies on the airport or 20 NM or less from the ARP (Airport Reference Point), 1 point; no navaids within 20 NM = 0 points. Approaches: Points equal to the number of published approaches (available in the FSX GPS) listed in FSX. Buildings: If any within airport fence, or if un-fenced, within the airport "flatten" area, 1 point; no buildings, 0 points. Control tower and MS Fuel pump do not count as buildings. Custom Buildings: If any within airport fence, or if un-fenced, within the airport "flatten" area, 1 point; no custom buildings, 0 points. Oil/fuel tanks count as custom buildings. Multi-plate: If the airport diagram required 2 or more plates, 1 point; 1 plate only, 0 points. = = = = = = = = = = Questions to allardjd@earthlink.net
  5. If you're a user of my airport diagrams from the MH File Library, I have a question for you. In the Country Bundles, I limit each download file to about 10 MB, roughly 40 airport diagrams. For many countries, states (US and Australia) and provinces (Canada), this means more than one download file, e.g the UK currently has UK Airports 01, 02, 03, 04 and 05. I propose to simplify the structure and my task for upkeep but the download files will get quite large. I'd like to hear from you if this creates a problem. Don't dally - I'll be making the decision pretty quickly. John

We have a pretty scattered bunch of airports today, three in the Southern hemisphere; none in the US. None are major airports but all are fairly decent sized. The one in India has more over-run than runway. AYTK in Rabaul is pretty infamous as the site of a major Japanese air and naval base during WWII. The number of uploads is greater because of the bundles, but we now have over 3,000 airports actually diagrammed. It doesn't compare to a Jepp set yet, but my prices are better. A tip of the hat to Dave Jones, who pointed out that I'd left the runway widths off the diagram for KLFT, in Lafayette Louisiana a few days ago - now corrected and issued as an update. Thanks, Dave. Quality is not a one-man job. I should not be doing these in the wee hours nor before being fully caffeinated in the morning but sometimes I do. The other update is KSUA, in Stuart, Florida. I'd forgotten what a big airport that is. I was also very surprised by how much different it is in the updated version - many more buildings and some taxiway changes at least - not just labeling either, but actual changes. It may be that the original came from FS9 data - not sure at this point, though I do include a source label now. That one came from April of 2010. The four new ones are from hither and yon, two in the US, including Ft. Worth Alliance, KAFW, which is a pretty good sized place. OMAD, Bateen in Abu Dhabi is a little weird - a 13,200' X 150' asphalt runway, a few buildings, acres of ramp space with a good taxiway system and lights, but no radio frequencies at all and no approaches despite some navaids in the middling distance. Another one of those Middle East enigmas, I guess. I don't have the energy to hunt down the answer. If you've noticed a lot of Pacific Island airports and particularly quite a few from Papua New Guinea, it's because one of the four lists I'm currently using was supplied by Australian Andrew Godden and is expressly for that area of the world. There are a couple of dozen airports left on that list, so you'll continue to see these for a while yet. I have other lists from Andrew too (and from others) and those will have their turn. These are not request lists, just randomized, working lists of airports of interest. Bona fide requests get priority treatment. A user has noted some differences in taxiway labeling between NZCH, Christchurch NZ, from yesterday, and what he's seeing in his FSX. I appreciate the question and the fact that he's trying to use the diagram already. I did some searching around to see what's going on. I've confirmed that the diagram conforms to stock FSX but what he's seeing looks more like the real-world charts for the airport, which are somewhat different from FSX. Just as a reminder to everyone, my diagrams document what's in FSX, not necessarily the real world. Add-on scenery can create discrepancies. It was a fair sized piece of work to crank these out and I'm happy to have managed to do both. I had a computer casualty yesterday that cost me a lot of lost work on PAED (I know, I know - save often). Anyway, now I'm older and wiser and both these airports are in the can. 10. Note: Links in this article are no longer functional. As of June 2017, the MH File Library no longer exists, nor can airport diagrams be downloaded individually. Instead there's a new Airport Diagram Download Center available here... Only bundle downloads are supported now, mainly by country, but also by state/province in the case of the US, Canada and Australia. Subscriptions, requests, on-demand bulk transfers and e-mail fulfillment of individual airport files are available on that page. 4/6/14 Airport Diagrams New: ENSB Longyear - Svalbard, Norway - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/3289-ensb/]http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/3289-ensb/ SATR Reconquista - Reconquista, Argentina - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/3290-satr/]http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/3290-satr/ Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 3,009; Airports 2,687; Downloads 3,694; Downloads yesterday 48 (10 days); Subscribers 20 I've returned from vacation and am back in the saddle again. I only managed two tonight, both fairly simple. ENSB, Longyear, in Svalbard Norway is WAY north at a latitude of 78 north - that's pretty far up in the Arctic regions. Watch the approaches, one, runway 28, is a localizer only and the localizer is offset from the runway centerline. It's probably one of those LDA approaches or something similar, suggesting that the terrain out there might just be "interesting". SATR, in Argentina looks like a more garden-variety place with two paved runways and a tower but no other buildings and no published approaches. There is a VOR/DME on the field so it looks like the proverbial piece of cake. I'm back on a normal footing after completing the Washington request list so this bunch is all over the map. LFRM is, of course, an update of the oldest diagram in the set. I'm back to doing one of those every other day to keep pulling up the tail. HLLB in Benghazi, Libya has an anomaly - there are two separate NDBs with different IDs and frequencies, co-located at the outer marker of runway 31. I've listed both because both seem to be a part of stock FSX. To quote our former first lady and past and future presidential candidate on another "anomaly" involving Benghazi, what does it really matter? Well, if FSX shows them, they go on the plate, right or wrong. I guess like presidential politics, you can pick whichever of them makes you least unhappy, though there's little to distinguish them. The others are pretty normal with not much to remark on. From the ICAO I expected I25 to be in Illinois or Indiana but was fooled again - it's West Virginia, and not a very big place - three-character ICAOs usually are not. This time it's airports requiring two plates. I haven't seen one in weeks, then had one last night and two of the three today. It's not as if they are bunched up on a list. I'm pulling from four lists in a strict rotation and each of those lists of airports is from a different source and each has been individually randomized. Having reached 2,500 airports diagrammed by the end of 2013, I've been thinking of a goal for 2014. At an average of 2.5 new airports per day it doesn't seem like adding a thousand for the year is far out of reach. Nine hundred should be a walk in the park. I'm going to stop short of making it a commitment or a New Year's resolution, but it's something to keep in mind. 14. 12/5/13 Airport Diagrams Note: Links in this article are no longer functional. I did make a little headway while gone, about 22 diagrams in 18 days, all new ones, which is better than I really expected to be able to do. All those were posted in November so have been documented in this forum already, in the November 2013 thread. With some other projects hanging over me, I'm going to revert to an earlier production target, three a day INCLUDING the update of the oldest file on alternate days. While away I had to produce a series of bundled airport diagrams and since I didn't have the library of files with me, had to download some of my own files from the MH File Library to do that. Some of the the recent spike in downloads (but not all) resulted from that. I did three today, including one update, as noted above.
