  1. Runway & cliff 'excursion' in Turkey

Definitely have to agree that human error was the culprit. Can you imagine two guys frantically going about making a bad situation worse. There's quite a lag to get a big jet to spool up. Odds are good that the reversers (or likely just one of them), which don't need to wait for spool-up, are the issue. With the CF going on in the cockpit I'd like to know which one of them was bracing himself against a rudder pedal whilst trying to get the reverser(s) into play. Ah.......armchair aviators - ain't we great? I just feel sorry for the poor bu**ers who were on the wrong runway for a port side excursion.
  2. Had this one forwarded to me today: Subject: Fw: I miss Bill Clinton! It doesn't matter what party you belong to this is good natured political humour from a show on Canadian TV, where a black comedian said he misses Bill Clinton.... "Yep, that's right - I miss Bill Clinton!" *He was the closest thing we ever got to having a real black man as President. *He plays the saxophone. *He smoked weed. *He had his way with ugly white women. *Even now? Look at him .... his wife works, and he doesn't! And, he gets a cheque from the government every month. *Manufacturers announced today that they will be stocking America's shelves this week with "Clinton Soup," in honour of one of the nations' distinguished men. It consists primarily of a weenie in hot water. *Chrysler Corporation is adding a new car to its line to honour Bill Clinton. The Dodge Drafter will be built in Canada.. *When asked what he thought about foreign affairs, Clinton replied, "I don't know, I never had one." *The Clinton revised judicial oath: "I solemnly swear to tell the truth as I know it, the whole truth as I believe it to be, and nothing but what I think you need to know." *Clinton will be recorded in history as the only President to have sex in the Oval Office between the Bushes.
  3. Sim addict?

I tried the train sim thing, too. No offence to those who are into it but...........i'd rather watch the grass grow (that from a sailor).
  4. Piece Taker...Long hauling in a Convair.

If I dig around I should be able to find photos of the one at the Pima County Air Museum in Tucson. I was there two years ago on my way back up North from an auto trip to Mexico. Quite an impressive aircraft. Pics (not mine) of the "City of Fort Worth" here: http://www.airplanesofthepast.com/b36-pima-air-museum.htm

Don't know if all experienced the same thing - but what a papa oscar sierra video. Betcha that was a scary ride from the front seats.
  6. Happy Birthday Quickmarch

Just signed in.......... Sucking on a Black Bush as we talk. Many thanks to all my friends and acquaintances on the best Sim Forum on the planet. (I am trying to forget that these things come up once a year - way too many under my belt, now) Cheers, March
  7. monitor advice needed please

I'm thinking of @hlminx. Talk about monitor envy. I think she said she's got three 32" displays. I don't have that much wall space. Unfortunately, I don't have the DP output on the video card. I'm becoming convinced that the problem lies in the forced (by form factor) choice of the GT730 video card. My tough luck that the solution is a new box+a new motherboard+a new GPU. I'm willing to bet that the 8Gig of memory mounted on my current motherboard will not be usable on a new board, so more expense incurred. I've got to hold out hope that my i7 chip can be moved over.
  8. monitor advice needed please

I'm not real clear on this statement. Are you saying you would reject the video card (output - outgoing HDMI signal) or the monitor/tv display (input - incoming HDMI signal)? Or is the passing of digital signals a back-and-forth sort of arrangement? I've always been less than satisfied with my displays. Not for the scenery - that's OK. My system happily runs REX, ORBX, and the sim with no video or OOM issues. It's reading the gauges from any reasonable (eyepoint) distance that bugs me. A lot of the aircraft models available, whether FSX or P3D suffer from hard-to-read gauges. I realise that some of these shortcomings are due to aged sim packages, but I don't think I should be straining to see the gauges on a 737NGX by PMDG . I'm in the throes of revisiting this whole issue. I've spent a lot of time trying to decide whether or not to try the Oculus Rift but I'm hearing less than stellar reports on the interaction between the visual sim and switches/knobs/ etc. I may be far better off going with video upgrades and a Track IR. I know we have some simmers on MH who use multi-monitors. Some use Track IR. Some say "don't use multi-monitors and Track IR". Because I spent so much time aboard a boat where space was at a major premium, my computer/video card choices were limited. I'm still using that equipment. Going to the Oculus Rift will require a major change in that I'll need to upgrade the video card. This cannot be done without upgrading my enclosure, the present one being a very small form factor. I'm thinking that upgrading the box/video card/monitor should be my first move.. I'm running an LG IPS 1920X1080 - 24" monitor (D-Sub and HDMI input) on a NVIDIA GT730 GPU (D-Sub, DVI, HDMI output, supports VGA, DVI, HDMI). The NVIDIA card is a result of the available space in my enclosure (it's a 'half-height' card). Also the motherboard only has one PCI slot. My wife is going away for a trip so this will be a good time to usurp the TV and plug it in to my video card. The TV is a Samsung - a 40" 1920X1080 LED. The TV has two HDMI input ports labeled: HDMI 1 STB and HDMI 2 DVI. I'm going to assume the port marked "DVI" is the one to use. I'll also take JA's advice and go find an HDMI 2 cable. The cable might improve the video on the monitor as well. I'm not holding out much hope for the TV as that is the same resolution as the 24 inch monitor blown up to 40 inches. I'll probably wind up selling pencils on Main St. I'm watching this space.............. Here's a 2013 link describing the cables and ports - a bit outdated: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2030669/laptop-accessories/hdmi-vs-displayport-which-display-interface-reigns-supreme.html
  9. Extreme heat today

I live in a different "Victoria" - 10C and raining here. Also hunkered down. Feeling for the folks on the East Coast.
  10. Guess the Aircraft

    looks like a glider
  11. ORBX with P3D v4.1 and FSX

Both Tim_A and Mutley have it right. I have FSX, P3Dv3 and the newest P3Dv4.1 on my platform. I no longer use the P3Dv3 - not much point when I have the 64bit replacement. I never added any third party stuff to the v3 as I was still evaluating it when v4 came along. I have a lot of aircraft for FSX, including a lot with my special QuikAire (AH and AH2) liveries, so I'll be keeping that one for a while. ORBX has a new FTX Central (FTX Central 3). It identified the three different sims and offered downloads to match my licenses. I did not download any of the v3 scenery as i want to keep one reference that uses only the stock scenery. March
  12. Happy Birthday JAllard

Ah! Key Lime Pie. One of my all time favorites. Used to get them from a little old lady in Marsh Harbour - many moons ago. All the best JA. Here's to lots of runway in front of you, lots of air under you and all the gas you can carry. March
  13. VR is here!

I just bought a third-party aircraft that has ONLY a virtual cockpit for VR. There's no 2D pop-ups, all functions are switchable within the VC. It's the GLJ Lear 25. It's pretty difficult to use without something like Track IR because you have to be continually hopping around the cockpit to see the switches. See: https://xtremeprototypes.com/en/product_GLJ25_se_v2r1.asp I'll bet it's the cats pajamas in Oculus Rift as long as you have some method of clicking switches inside the VC. Take a look at P3Dv4. There's even a menu choice in the menu bar for "Virtual Reality". Looks like P3Dv4 is intended for use with something like Oculus Rift. I need to take the time to look in to this in more depth (pun intended). There's a good discussion (quite lengthy) here: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/511276-p3d-v4-vr-all-you-need-to-know/ - goes to six pages. Still on the fence. March
  14. Pretty incredible

See: https://www.cnn.com/2017/12/17/us/atlanta-airport-power-outage/index.html This is pretty amazing that all of the power, including backups could be taken out. Appears it was a fire in a sub-station that started the mess. Cheers, March
  15. Joysticks

I've got to agree with @allardjd on the Extreme 3D by Logitech. I've used it for years while on my boat due to lack of space for other controls. The only difficulty I ever had with it was the need to cross my left hand over my body to get at the little paddle on the base which I mapped for throttle. The trigger works great for linked braking and there's enough buttons and switches to map for most other cockpit switchable needs. Besides the paddle there are four buttons on top of the stick around the top-hat switch, a single push-button on the side of the stick and six buttons on the left side of the base. I'll mention that all of the functions were mapped using the paid version of FSUIPC although the sticks' native drivers were good and it worked fine under FSX with the stock control mapping. That's more than can be said for the horrid drivers put out by Saitek which are best banished from your PC or laptop forever. On my PC, I use Saitek's Pro-Flite Yoke, Throttle Quadrant and trim wheel with CH Pro Pedals. I have been playing with the idea of taking the Extreme 3D apart and re-purposing it as a steering tiller for my Dash 8 and Boeings. The jury is out on the CH pedals - I've never been able to satisfactorily map the brakes on that platform. I'm enough of a sim nut to have traveled with a laptop and a Logitech F310 Gaming Pad while on vacation with the wife - that keeps your hand in and keeps you current on AirHauler. I found this a while back and bookmarked it for future consideration: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/3drudder-foot-controller-for-pc-black-red/6121408.p?skuId=6121408 . Bookmarking is as far as I've gotten with it. Have fun, March
  16. The devil made me do it! I just made it two sinners, @hlminx. How can you dodge a 45% off bullet? Global Base and Vectors in the bag. While I was at it, I completed NZ by going for the SI as well as the rest of the Wet Coast of NA. That's it! Christmas is over for March. I sort of understand what my wife means when she tells me how much she "saved" at the (fill in the blanks) sale. Cheers,
  17. Thanks everyone, for the advice. I'll go for it. March
  18. Sorry for all the questions What about frame rate hit (in P3Dv4 especially)? It's quite a bit of money to lay out only to be disappointed in the results.
  19. System spec guidance, and software advice

    1) I didn't know that! I've never used autorudder. I started out with a twist-style joystick. 2) Agreed. An accurate slip is very near impossible with the joystick I'm describing. You get real good at crabbing down the centreline, then kicking the a/c straight as the mains touch. If you like big airliners, try the 747. It has castoring mains.
  20. To you knowledgeable ORBX types: How important are the "global Base pack" and "global Vector pack"? Now that I've gone 64bit, I've reloaded the ORBX stuff I have and I'm reactivating it one area at a time. So far, no conflicts. I have NZ NI, Oz, PNW and Pacific Fjords with a few of the I've got the Global NA Airport Pack - I think that was a freebie.
  21. System spec guidance, and software advice

I'm going to ring in here with a suggestion: Most high-end joysticks have a "twist" (of the wrist) feature which is mapped to rudder. This will solve your dilemma about the rudder pedals. As @allardjd says; it's possible to fly without pedals but it's a bear on the ground taxiing with the keyboard. If he's interested in airliners (we call the tubes of chairs), I suggest the Airbus line. This because they are normally flown with a joystick rather than a yoke. However, all aircraft can be flown with a joystick so Airbus is not the only choice. I was offshore on my boat for 7 years. My only choice was to use a laptop. The one you're describing is very similar to the Acer that I used. Just be careful about how much scenery (complex airports, especially) you load the thing up with. Too much "eye candy" tends to bog things down on, or close to, the ground.
  22. VR is here!

Advertising going on right now for CAD $529. Rift Sensor X2 Touch Controllers I'm at the point where the computer needs to be upgraded. In fact, I just bought a sim package that I cannot run (the high-end part) on my machine. I'm looking at the Rift at the same time. Once I go to a 970 or greater video card and another 8Gig of RAM, I'll have everything in place. Any advice, @JG?
  23. PTA

I'd love to use it but................ I've got Rex Essentials + O/D that I use with P3Dv3. I'm now into P3Dv4. With this recent sale incentive I purchased TDSC Enhanced from JF. The download (I eventually did it twice) was huge. Unfortunately, the installer briefly flashes something on my screen then goes away. No install. I sent email to JF Support, reporting the problem, I'm waiting on a response. I'm a WIN7 user so I've got to do the right-click/run as administrator trick - doesn't work. I think I'll d/l PTA on the off chance that I will eventually get TDSC operational.
  24. Words of Wisdom from a Former FSX Fighter Pilot A couple of us local retired types from the Senior Center were asked to address a high school gathering put on by the PTA. As luck would have it, I was the only speaker to show up, so I had the stage to myself. I talked about staying in school, getting good grades and all that usual bullshit; and since I had plenty of time because those other guys didn't show, I threw it open for questions. The last one asked was, "Can you give us a couple of your life's philosophical beliefs?” I said, “That’s an easy one. Looking back over my 7+ decades, I believe I've spent close to 90% of my earnings on booze and whores. The rest I just wasted.” I was escorted out without getting to finish my last two rules to live by: 1) If it flies, floats, or f__ks, it’s cheaper to rent it! 2) If it’s got tits or tires, you’re gonna have problems with it I hope they invite me back next year so I can finish. Kids need to know this stuff.
  25. An Air Canada pilot tried to out do Harrison Ford at KSFO. Warned off by ATC. Could have been a real bad one. See: https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/07/11/air-canada-flight-nearly-lands-on-taxiway-at-san-francisco-airport.html
