Flying around GenX vol.8 (Scotland South) I came across an odd looking Falkirk Wheel - a rotating boat lift connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Downloading some photos of the structure confirms that a copy of the object is piggy-backed on top of the original.

The Falkirk Wheel is apparently an FSX default object which GenX vol.8 excludes and re-positions to fit with its terrain texture & mesh. If you also use Ultimate Terrain Europe, it also re-positions the wheel - unfortunately the GenX exclude file does not extend to this alternate position, therefore two Falkirk Wheels are visible.

If you are running GenX vol.8 & UT Europe check your scenery at N56 00.0, w03 50.5.

I've created an 'Exclude bgl file' named UK_FalkirkUT_EXC and placed it in the GenX vol.8/Vectors folder which removes the false object (GenX vol.8 must be above UT-Europe in the scenery library).

If you are able to create your own bgl files the exclude can be created from the following xml file :

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<FSData version="9.0"
xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/20...Schema-instance'
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">
<ExclusionRectangle
latitudeMinimum="N55 59.91"
latitudeMaximum="N56 00.00"
longitudeMinimum="W003 50.53"
longitudeMaximum="W003 50.47"
excludeAllObjects="TRUE"/>
</FSData>

If anyone does have this problem and is not familiar with FSX SDK I'll be happy to place a copy of the exclude file into the members file uploads section of this site.

Cheers,
Ray.

Hi Ray,
I reiterate what Joe says, Thanks.
Having said that, when I was doing the review for GenX Vol 8, I didn't have this problem.
I am also running UT Europe. Strange.
When I next fly I will check this out and let you know what I find.
Would you be able to post a screen shot of what you saw please?
Thanks again for the HU.

Brian :thum:

Hi Ray,
Thanks for posting your shots.
I can say that the bottom image is correct because I have actually been on the Falkirk wheel and indeed spent a week on the Union Canal going from Falkirk to Edinburgh. A great trip and one we may repeat in the future some time.
Thanks again,
Brian :thum:

Hey Ray,
I've now had a chance to study what's going on with UT X and Gen X Vol 8 and I've found another way to combat this issue.
Here are 3 pic's showing what I have found using a different approach with each picture.

1. Without UT Europe.

2. With UT Europe.

3. With UT Europe but not UT Object Repositioning.

If my pictures look different to yours, bear in mind I am also using Treescapes for Gen' X Vol 8.

If you wish to use UT Europe in tandem with Gen X Vol 8, just uncheck the 'Object Repositioning' in your world scenery folder.

Cheers
Brian

Thanks, Brian.

Glad to have confirmation of this issue. Nothing worse than having a problem that no one else has!?

Your canal boat holiday sounds very relaxing (one of those things on my list of life's to do's before I ... ). Of course if the real world Falkirk Wheel looked like that shown in the first picture, your boat would have needed wings!

Disabling the UT-Europe object positioning section could open a can of worms for many people. Many of the UK's bridges are re-positioned & re-sized by UT-E, giving a much better fit to GenX photo scenery than the default scenery objects - for example the default Humber suspension bridge is less than 2/3's scale and out of position in GenX vol3 version 1 but fully corrected in UT-E (GenX version 3 has a custom Humber Bridge).

FSX default scenery has many errors in the UK. Years ago before UTx-Europe I made a scenery program which moved & re-sized many UK scenery objects (available within FSX Power Project) - a notable error is the main Cambridge University Campus is about 2-miles out of position - any Oxford grad's should not laugh - the default main Oxford campus object is a mirror image of the real one.

Cheers,
Ray.

Cheers Ray,
Thanks also for your thoughts on disabling the UT X OP. As I only really fly around Scotland and North America/Canada, I was unaware of the problems with other objects in the country.
I am now going to check out the bridges in Scotland because I'm sure I have seen the Erskine Bridge, west of Glasgow city, placed on top of another default bridge which looks pretty strange.
I'll post if I find anything wrong.
Thanks again,
Regards
