...so lets start at the beginning!

Posted by simi_av8r , 15 February 2011 · 393 views

well, as promised here is the next update, and as promised, pictures of the kit in raw, un-touched form. but first, a little history lesson....or you could just skip down to the pictures.

Zerstörergeschwader 26 was formed in early 1936 from the Jagdgeschwader 134"Horst Wessel". The Geschwaderstab and I. Gruppe were located in Dortmund, with II.Gruppe in Werl and III. Gruppe in Lippstadt. ZG26 was re-equipped with the Messerschmitt Bf 110 shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
In April 1942, ZG26 was disbanded, and the Geschwaderstab then merged to form Nachtjagdgeschwader 3 with III. Gruppe remaining the sole autonomous Gruppe with the other Gruppen being integrated into Zerstörergeschwader 2 and Zerstörergeschwader 3.  In 1943, ZG26 then reformed from the original III. Gruppe and incorporated I. and III. Gruppe of Zerstörergeschwader 1.

3 Stab of ZG26 (or III./ZG 26) then moved to be based in Wunsdorf during early 1944 following the British Winter offensive of 1943. The Bf 110's armed with two 30mm and four 20mm cannon (two in a ventral fuselage gun pod), and four Werfer-Granate 21 210mm rocket launchers, being used to break up the massed bomber formations from long range...and this is where the trail ends.

So, why all this history? Well, as you'll see below, the Bf110 I've chosen to represent is one from III./ZG26 from the winter of 1943/1944 who were, at the time, under the control of Knights Cross holder and Luftwaffe elite pilot, Major Fritz Schulze-Dickow. Anyway, enough of the history, shall we proceed onto the kit itself?

Overview of all kit sprues, box and the decals

the decal sheet...notice the lack of swastika decals - thanks Revell (Germany) looks like i'll have to buy some separately!

and finally, the instruction sheet - specifically the markings chart for 3 Stab of ZG.26 "Horst Wessel", my choice for this model.

So, there we have it, a very highly detailed kit and decal sheet...It also appears that there are lots of after market options available for the cockpit so i'll have plenty of decisions to make during the build, let alone before i pick up the scalpel to cut parts off their sprues...and that mottled paint effect should be interesting  to do without an airbrush.

And guess what folks, the build gets under-way this weekend, so check back soon for more!

Somewhere upstairs I have a big box full of unbuilt (or half-built) models that I'never had time to make. Maybe one day...

Well Tim, if this goes well and there's interest from the fellow Mutleys Hangar-ons, i could introduce an "Airfix Group Build" based around a theme (much like the monthly screenshot contest)...For example 'WW2 Allied fighters" could be any model of a WW2 Allied fighter (Airfix, Revell or other manufacture) - spitfire, p51, hurricane you name it. We'd all build the models together, share pics of our progress and any advice

on that note, if you'd ever need any advice on your kits i'm sure either myself or HurricanMK1c (Keiran) above could throw some info your way

That sounds like a good idea!

And yes, I'd help you out if you need help
Nice project Simi, looking forward to the updates

That sounds like a good idea!

i assume you mean the 'group build' thing? Either way, not my idea, i picked it up from a modelling website. The only issue i can foresee at the moment is the uptake by those here at MH as it would involve some outlay on the members part on actually getting the kit they want.

Yes I was referring to the group build. I can see the same problem, even for me - the aircraft are mostly half-built! :icon_yikes:

WH Smiths should sell it (I'm not a subscriber - buy Model Rail every month from Easons (bookstore) but you don't have them in England!)

You can also get it here - http://shop.keypubli...March_2011.html if not in WHSmiths
I had a quick look today, the article was really good. Didn't pick up a copy though, i stopped by a mates on the way home and asked to borrow his!

Fair enough!
Talking about asking advice - I have just returned to plastic modelling after about 12 years away and am out of practice.
I have had a couple of jobs totally spoiled by one thing - the decals. Or rather, the decal film.
I'll post about it in the forum - then can add some piccys.

Simi, how is the kit for flash etc? I can see what seems to be quite a bit on the sprue, but it's hard to tell if there's any on the actual mouldings.

I remember about 30-40 years ago, Revell used to be quite bad for that - but their kits were quite cheap. I remember buying a lovely big Phatntom in 1/32nd scale and finding the bits were all warped and impossible to put together.

Things have probably changed a lot since then, so I'd be interested to know - for reference on my next model shop visit :)

Revell kits (in my experience - have got the An-124, A380, 737-800, 1/48 Mossie, 1/144 A340 and 1/200 737-200) are not bad - certinatly on-par with the amount of flash seen in some Airfix kits
Okay - well I think I'll be steering clear of Italerei.

The only one I remember building previously was a Henschel 129, which wasn't bad. I am now building an Italerei HH-53 and it is dreadful.

Lots of flash and the parts fit together very poorly. On top of that the 'destructions' (as I used to call them as a lad) are not at all clear. When a kit is like that I just lose motivation.

It comes with decals for US and Israeli versions, but I'm building it as a Heer Sea Stallion instead, in the memory of an awesome airborne assault I saw in them in Germany, whilst on a NATO exercise in '86.

Watching six of these monsters being thrown around the sky in a tactical approach passing underneath an autobahn bridge to the insertion point (LZ if you're US based?) was really awe inspiring!

I'll be picturing that in my mind's eye every time I look at this model.

Of course, I can also re-enact it myself, with my Nemeth Designs CH-53E in FSX :D

Ich bin gespannt, mit dem Fortschritt zu sehen. Viel Glück!

I'm anxious to see the progess. Good luck!

I have an ME 109 in the closet. In the box. Never opened. been there for like 5 years now. I just never get the time to work on it.
